Lake Texoma Facts and Fishing

Lake Texoma is a well known lake in Texas. Lake Texoma was built by the Corps of Engineers in the 1940’s, and was stocked with black bass and crappie along with the native white bass in the Red and Washita Rivers. The lake is actually located in northeast Texas and southeast Oklahoma. Lake Texoma is one of the more well known lakes in Texas and is one of the most popular fishing destinations in both Texas and Oklahoma.

Lake Texoma is recognized as a top fishing destination by anglers and professional guides for many freshwater species. There is bass fishing, really good catfishing too, but what the lake is really known for is the great striper fishing action. In fact Lake Texoma is one of only 8 lakes where the striper do not depend on the ocean or government re-stocking programs to keep the striper population in the lake strong. The striper in Lake Texoma do it all themselves and as we mentioned the Lake is only one of eight where the striper spawn in freshwater.

Texoma is known as the “Striper Capital of the World.” As we said this lake is one of the few reservoirs in the nation where striped bass reproduce naturally. Other popular species include largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, hybrid striped bass, white crappie, black crappie, channel catfish and blue catfish.

Lake Texoma doesn’t have much in the way of aquatic vegetation which isn’t a good thing for fishing but there are plenty of rocks, boulders, sunken timber, submerged stumps, sandy flats, and other cover which is good for fishing. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife there are approximately 9 miles of rip-rap, 50 miles of standing timber, and 50 miles of submersed aquatic vegetation. The remainder is cut banks, sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, and bluffs. A shoreline development ratio of 13.88 indicates an irregular and branched shoreline, which also increases habitat for fish.

According to the US Army Corp of Engineers Lake Texoma has 54 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers managed parks, 2 state parks, 25 resorts, 40 miles of equestrian trails, 2 wildlife refuges and many hundreds of campsites.

Although Lake Texoma fishing is the number one activity there are many resorts and lodges around the lake for vacationing that offer other things to do. In addition to the camp grounds and state parks Lake Texoma offers sail boating, water skiing, wind surfing, and personal watercraft fun. For travelers and tourists visiting the region there are also golf course for the land lovers who aren’t particularly interested in a great day of Lake Texoma striper fishing.
